Exciting Partnership Sees 80 000 Bags of Clothing Help Those in Need

turn the tide 4 children (ttt4c) has the vision to impact those who are in need – through the training of caregivers, distribution of resources, sport camps and networking with the Body of Christ.

With this goal in mind, the ttt4c team worked to help a founding board member of ttt4c, Hennie Burger, and his sons launch clothing4children (c4c) – a non-profit organisation which mobilises the youth to give, in unprecedented measure, to the poor.)

c4c launched at the end of 2010 with Schalk and Wim Burger each successfully challenging the students at their respective schools, to give good quality unused clothing, shoes, linen and sports equipment to the needy.

Since the launch date, c4c, together with ttt4c, have had the privilege of visiting, preaching to and challenging the pupils at another 60 schools across South Africa to also give. At each school empty c4c bags were distributed to the pupils, who were challenged to return them full of clothing – and in so doing, to make a difference to the many that live in poverty.

What a blessing to have witnessed the generosity of principals, teachers and students at these schools. Clearly, people in this country want to bless those who do not have!  After only the first 19 school collections, in 5 major cities in South Africa, already 30 000 bags of clothing were collected.

It was at this point in the journey that the Blue Bulls agreed to use their stadium as a rallying point for a c4c collection for the Pretoria / Tshwane metro pole. In a matter of weeks, 41 schools in Tshwane (with a total of 50 000 students) collected over 50 000 bags of clothing – with a retail value of 200 million Rand. The bags were first collected at the schools and then delivered to Loftus Versveld Stadium. Here an actual field of 100 m by 50m – covered and filled to a depth of 1m with bags of clothing – became visible evidence of a city, who together responded to the call of ‘LET’S GIVE’!

The generosity of the schools and people of Pretoria was acknowledged and celebrated at Loftus Versveld at half time during the Blue Bulls versus Western Province Currie Cup game on the 17th of September 2011.

On Sunday morning, the 18th of September 2011, ttt4c partnered with key churches, charities and faith based organizations to have 60 trucks collect the 50 000 bags of clothing from the stadium – in a record time of just 5 hours. These bags were taken to ten nodes around the city for sorting. What a joy to then distribute these clothes – in the name of the Lord – among the 1,2 million needy people who live in the Pretoria / Tshwane area. The distribution was undertaken by ttt4c, local church networks and other ministries and organizations – including Walk Thru the Bible’s High Impact Network.

It has been a privilege for ttt4c to be part of, what might be the single biggest collaboration in a city, in our country’s history – one that saw sports, schools and churches join forces to together meet a pressing need. May this be just the beginning! It is indeed exciting to see the difference we can make as we partner together to be ‘the hands and feet’ of Christ and meet needs in a practical way.

ttt4c is also grateful to the Lord for the partnership with c4c and we rejoice in the total of over 80 00 bags of clothing that have been collected and distributed since this journey began.

May you be encouraged by the testimony of Mrs Rita de Villers, a ttt4c donor:

“My children attend a primary and high school in Centurion. Both schools participated in the clothing4children project. It was wonderful to see the amount of clothes that came from one community. I believe that these clothes will both alleviate need and bring great joy to other communities. I think this is a wonderful initiative and was glad to see turn the tide 4 children supporting the project. May you have great wisdom in the handling and distribution of the clothes.”

May many more experience that ‘it is more blessed to give, than to receive’!
